Myeloperoxidase (MPO) is increasingly being recognized as an important factor in many inflammatory diseases, particularly cardiovascular and neurological diseases. MPO-specific imaging agents would thus be highly useful to diagnose early disease, monitor disease progression, and quantify treatment effects.
(MPO) is a peroxidase enzyme most abundantly present in neutrophil granulocytes (a subtype of white blood cells). MPO is a lysosomal protein stored in azurophilic granules of the neutrophil. Myeloperoxidase has a heme pigment, which causes its green color in secretions rich in neutrophils, such as pus and some forms of mucus.
